K.U.M. delivers six sampling systems for biological marine research

K.U.M. Umwelt- und Meerestechnik Kiel GmbH has delivered six new sampling systems to the SeaPump research group at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research. The instruments will be used for year-round sampling in the midwater column, supporting research in biological oceanography. The delivery includes three sediment traps and three traps specifically designed for gelatinous zooplankton. These systems enable scientific teams to collect and analyse particles and organisms over extended periods under real-world conditions. The data obtained will make an important contribution to improving our understanding of marine ecosystems and climate-relevant processes.

Advanced technology for long-term deployments

The proven design of K.U.M.’s sampling systems is based on a concept that has been established for around two decades. However, both the mechanical components and the electronics have been extensively further developed for the six new systems. A fully titanium frame enables different configurations for a range of sampling scenarios. The revised bottle carousel also provides reliable, watertight sealing - even when the system is significantly tilted during recovery.

The new electronics unit further expands the systems’ capabilities: it is designed for long-term measurement campaigns of up to three years while also making the instruments easier to operate. 

By providing this instrumentation, K.U.M. and the Rosenxt Group are supporting biological marine and climate research with reliable technologies for demanding underwater applications. The delivery highlights K.U.M.’s expertise in developing highly specialised subsea monitoring systems for scientific and environmental research. K.U.M. has been part of the Rosenxt Group since January 2026, complementing its subsea portfolio with solutions for deep-sea monitoring, data acquisition and scientific instrumentation.
